I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.- Psalm 139:14
Repeat after me, I WILL NOT COMPARE MYSELF TO ANYONE ON THE INTERNET!
So it hit me so hard, what’s wrong with us and our expectations in life! What’s wrong with our relationships, what’s wrong with our satisfaction in our jobs, our education, our hangouts, our lives as a whole! I think I’ve figured out why we are ungrateful sometimes and fail to see the blessing that is; our lives…… it’s the internet!!! The internet is what’s sucking us dry on day to day bases! The internet!!! Okay well the internet’s representation of affairs. I would have narrowed it down to social media but no it’s beyond the social media platforms, it goes beyond! The internet has sucked us dry of our satisfaction in life.
You are content with what you have until you open your Instagram page and see someone with more, you are fine with the state you are in knowing that you’d move up in due time until you are on twitter and see that ‘everyone’ else is already ahead. Ahead?? Who defines ahead anyway? What determines that they are ahead? Maybe it’s just me, but sometimes things on the internet make me dissatisfied with my own life! I mean here I am happy with myself probably enjoying let’s say my new phone and then I open Instagram, Facebook, twitter or Snapchat or just my yahoo page on safari and there I see, that there is a newer model of my phone and all of a sudden mine seems like it’s not enough anymore. All of a sudden I’m not entirely excited about the phone I lost sleep over when I first got it.
The internet has a fine way of dimming the treasures we have and amplifying the things we don’t! It keeps us on a chase for more that we don’t see the blessings right in front of us. I mean you were happy with your girlfriend taking you out to lunch and thought it was a cute gesture till you went online and saw someone’s girlfriend buy him a new PS4 console with FIFA ’17 then you start to lose your gratitude for what you have and want “more”. I am tempted to talk about the new craze hashtag #goals but I need an entire new post for that. We are losing sight of the blessing in front of us and focusing on what MORE we could have. Forgetting that it would never be enough. The things we see online is what motivates us now. We don’t strive to BE better, we strive to HAVE better. Your level of ‘prosperity’ is based on how far or close you are to these internet standards. It’s really making the world an ugly place if you ask me because now everyone is low-key in competition with someone else and everyone wants to fit in and be the “it” guy.
But godliness with contentment is great gain. – 1 Timothy 6:6
The world through the internet is picking our friends, picking our clothes, picking our hang out spots and picking everything for us! We are gradually losing our free will to choose to want to do things or be things on our own. Don’t get me wrong I don’t know how I’d exist without the internet, there are a whole lot of positive things we learn or gain from the internet. I mean its where I learned like a year ago that peafowl is a name for those birds and peacock was only the male. I really thought it was peacock for all lol but there are also a whole lot of foolishness we are consciously or unconsciously picking up too!
We chase after the validation of others that we forget to live our own awesome lives. Look, let me tell you right now and right here, no one’s life is as perfect as it looks online, no I’m not saying no ones life looks as good but there is a lot more happening at the back end we don’t see. I mean it’s easy to see the long list of things we haven’t done and people we haven’t met and places we haven’t been to and feel dissatisfied with our own lives! It’s very easy because all you have to do is turn on your phone and it’s all there. I’m challenging you to take a moment and look at the things you do have, people you have and have met, and the places you’ve been to…. someone somewhere hasn’t had the opportunity to experience them yet, someone somewhere is on his knees praying for half the blessings you have but fail to see. DO NOT COMPARE YOURSELF TO ANYONE in fact ANYONE ANYWHERE! Not just on the internet. I will say this over and over, we are all running different races, we are all on different chapters of our lives. To want to be like someone is a waste of the awesome person that you are, to want to be where someone else is, faster than God intends is such a waste of the beauty of growing and learning process.
Before I end this, let me share a story I have shared before on my Facebook. I was in primary school and there was this girl (I pray she’s resting peacefully) who had different cars dropping her off in school. We had heard her family was loaded!!! I remember I used to say with a friend ” eish lucky girl! See the way her parents have many cars and she has a driver and a maid who waits for her till school is over” oh I forgot to mention she had to be wheeled around, I really don’t know what exactly was wrong with her but she was pleasant and her situation didn’t stop us from being a little envious of her. One time I happened to be standing next to her as the children in her class played and the look on her face was one I’d never forget. She looked like she wished she was out there running around with them. Here we were wishing for one side of her life which were things that did not hold any value when weighed against the moments, experience and abilities we had that she didn’t. For how long would we have things and people dictate to us what and who truly matters. We lose sight of beautiful things and experiences and chase after the lives of others. We forget that each day is a gift and miracles happen in and around us each moment but we are too busy trying to catch up with the world to notice.
For the last time, repeat after me! I WILL NOT COMPARE MYSELF TO ANYBODY! You are awesome regardless of what stage you are in life, don’t you ever forget that love!
