Listen people! Do not sleep on the creation story. Do not sleep on it at all, there is so much truth and revelation underneath that I’m amazed each time I read it. I mean it’s one short story of the creation of the world plus our first encounter with man yet right in there there is teaching on the power of words, purpose, marriage, fatherhood, fellowship, communication, confidence, the curse of independence amongst many. Recently, to my amazement, the Holy Spirit taught me about tithe through the story of Adam and Eve. Yes, my reaction was probably the same as yours is now hehe so yah that’s what I want to be sharing with you today.
Genesis 2:16-17 KJV
And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: …
I remember some time ago, a colleague from work had sort of an argument with me about tithe. His point was that, sometimes when he sees people in need he’d rather give them his tithe instead of the Church because technically its something that God cares about. So yeah sometimes he’d give his tithe out for different causes that he believes the Lord said he should be mindful of hehe. I remember I was young and foolish so I went back and forth with him on this. I didn’t have a lot of substance or knowledge just a passion for Christ plus a lot of anger. Obviously raising my voice and questioning his sanity got us nowhere lol I remember as I walked away from him to go rant to my other colleague, the Holy Spirit said gently to me ‘ you should have simply asked him why he doesn’t use the 90% left for his good deeds’.
This encounter came back to me as I read the scripture in genesis above. This is how I heard the scripture as I read it, “ … of all your increase, thou mayest freely spend; use for whatever you please but of the first 10%, thou shalt not touch for that belongs to me.” My eyes just popped wide open! Wait what? How am I hearing about tithe in the garden? I remember raising my head to look at the projected scripture and at the preacher at the time in confusion then back at the scripture. I read it out again and I remembered when the Holy Spirit said why doesn’t he use the 90% left. That was a really good question if you ask me. Why wasn’t the devil talking to them about the millions of trees and fruits left in the garden but he was focused on the one God said not to touch. I mean there are so many trees, God says don’t touch this one, it shouldn’t be a big deal because we have lots more to choose and eat from. Same with tithe, the devil knows you have the 90% left but he’s not going to talk about that because it’s not the one tree(10%) God ordered you not to touch. Sometimes we don’t even remember that we have 90% because he gets us soooo focused on the 10%.
Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. – Malachi 3:8
Let me blend the conversation now with the conversation they had in the garden so you get a clearer picture of how I saw it(hopefully):
I mean did God really say you shouldn’t spend all your money the way you want? – serpent.
Oh no God didn’t say that, he says we can use our money as we please but his 10% we cant touch because umm it’s His. –Us
Oh but did he say to pay the 10% to the church? Did he say to give it directly to Him? Oh I’m sure He wouldn’t mind you using it for medicine for the sick, food for the homeless, pay off some debts of someone. I mean its all God’s work – serpent.
Lol do you realize how sound that conversation is seeming, how logical and harmless it is? But let’s ask ourselves why isn’t he talking to us about our 90% left? our 90% could equally get those done too, no?
For me, I believe the first thing the devil wants us to do is forget the actual meaning for tithe. Tithe is beyond the money you give. It’s not something you are offering to Him. It’s HIS money you are giving back that’s why in Malachi 3, He mentioned being robbed. Tithe is about seeking God FIRST. Having Him first in your dealings. God wants you to be mindful and intentional about it, where with every increase you remember to give Him thanks first when you remember to give Him His portion. He’s looking at your heart, looking at His place in your life. Tithe isn’t your gift to God where you are at liberty to decide what you want to use it for on His behalf. He says bring the tithes into the storehouse. It’s His money, bring it to Him and let Him use it as He pleases. if you deny someone a token or gift, they can’t call it robbery now can they?
Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house – Malachi 3:10
Also, if you have an issue with paying tithe to your church because the pastor will abuse it then I have a few things to say to you . One, why are you in a church where you don’t trust leadership or you don’t believe them to use for the things they ought? I mean how do you even receive nourishment from a place where you think of the people in authority in that manner?
Secondly, you have a problem. I’m yet to meet a person who understands Bible principle and understands tithe under the New Testament Spirit that concerns himself solely on what and how the church spends his tithe. No, I’m not saying you shouldn’t be mindful of it but I’m saying you shouldn’t be a person who is only obedient to God based on the reaction or outcome of his obedience. “ I’d pay tithe because I like or approve on what I’m seeing the tithe being used for” God says pay, best believe He’d handle it if there is any abuse or misconduct. You really think that God; the Almighty cannot deal with them so you have to take matters in your own hands? God clearly said in His word that you’d reap what you sow. That’s why God doesn’t need our help to avenge. (Romans 12:19)
He knows to everything we do there are consequences. You either attract a blessing or a curse. So why not leave Him to deal with His own servant. He’s the Almighty, He really doesn’t need your help in dealing with His own. You don’t tolerate your church, you celebrate it. You don’t attend a church, you are the church! You are a member in particular of it. So my advice, don’t stay in a church where you have an evil eye for authority and how they run things there. Believe me, it’s more dangerous for you than it is for them. However sometimes like i said, YOU are the problem. you are the one with the evil eye, the deceived one, the one who has been introduced to a new light by the enemy so no matter where you go, you’d view the church and the people in authority in that same corrupted light.
I want to believe that it all boils down to our view on tithe and it’s significance. If you read it according to law, of course you’d grow weary of doing it and it would also be so easy for the devil to try to convince you to stop or channel it into something else. You need to pause and ask yourself why the devil is so bent on your going out of the order of God. Why he’s not questioning how you use the rest? Look at the situation in the garden, did it look like he had their best interest? That he wanted their good? No! So why on earth would you allow him to bully your faith with logic? Make you believe that “ Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day you start diverting his tithe elsewhere, then your eyes shall be opened to the “truth” and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil”. Wondering how you are gods? Well you get to decide what to use His tithe for, you get to decide for yourself if it’s profitable to pay it or not. You are putting yourself on the same scale. See how harmful such ‘harmless’ thoughts can be?
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: – 1 peter 5:8
I urge you to study the Word, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit of course. Seek to understand God’s principles under the new covenant we have with Him. See how things change for you. See how easy it is to detect when the devil comes to you with seemingly harmless questions and statements. The devil has no off days, he’s always roaming to and fro the earth, searching whom to devour, so we need to be armoured up with the Word for when he visits.
