It’s the month of love so of course I’m going to be cliche and talk about someone I have come to know properly and love.
Studies show that if you go to bed with someone on your mind then you must be in love with them. Lol I used ‘studies show‘ but that’s my fancy way of saying a lot of people say. Anyway if that’s truth, it makes me wonder what going to bed with someone on your mind, waking up at dawn with the person still on your mind, laying there at 2am smiling and giggling because of this person meant? This was me, one dawn in January and don’t tell me, I already figured it out myself. It means this is the person I want to spend the rest of my life with, no questions asked! I had known for a while but that night was it for me. Last night was my ‘yup it’s official! You love him and you love him hard’ and my confirmation is that I’m actually sharing it. That’s the level of my certainty.
Lol I’m sure by now I have your full attention. You guys like love sheesh! All that is true anyway! I was up at dawn thinking about a man I went to bed thinking about but I’m sorry (not really) to burst your bubble but I’m talking about Jesus. Today isn’t fully about Him but someone whose story has thrilled me so much I don’t even believe myself that I just noticed the intensity and power in her story. I named her Tikvah. We know her as the woman with the issue of blood, Jesus healed in Mark 5 but I didn’t want to stay calling her that through out the post so I gave her Tikvah which is ‘hope’ in hebrew. Tikvah is my dad’s second favourite woman in the Bible and I never understood why until that day.
Ladies, you are going to understand this way easier than the men but men try to keep your imaginations alive enough to keep up. So long ago, there was a maiden named Tikvah. I imagine her with her edges on fleek, skin glowing because they ate healthy and walked a lot, waist snatched and all. I like to imagine that life was pretty simple yet good for her then from no where she was struck with an illness. For 12 YEARS, she had her period DAILY!!!!!! I need you to picture that properly. We get periods monthly and they last 5-7 days then we are back to our regular routine. She was on her period, everyday for 12 YEARS. The movie 12 years a slave should have been about her because trust me she was bound and a slave for those 12 years. Mind you, she wasn’t born in this era. She was born in a time where if you are bleeding, you are unclean, impure so you were isolated. She lived in a time where they didn’t have showers in the room next door, they didn’t have access to sanitary towels and underwear like we do. They didn’t have access to clothes like we do. Let’s just assume that they did, she didn’t have the money to purchase anything new since she had spent all of it on physicians. I imagine her soiling her sheets, soiling her clothes, too weak to wash or well wash herself or her clothes properly. Ladies, can you just pull out the memory of your discomfort. How drained and irritated you get during that time of the month and just imagine having that everyday for 12 years. it is important for me and you as well to get a close to perfect picture of her situation.
So there Tikvah was, lost a lot of friends if not all of her friends, all her suitors fled obviously, her family probably pushed her away because they thought she was cursed or something. She definitely got sacked from her job. She was lean, weak and tired. She had no money. No one would talk to her or well no one would be caught talking to her, she couldn’t even be seen out mingling with people so she had to make all her trips to the physician very early in the morning or maybe late at night. Weirdly, right now as I’m writing, I want to believe she had a friend who helped out though. Not to say it was impossible to do all she did on her own but I’d explain why I believe so soon. So Tikvah was alone, broke, tired, in pain, weak but she was also PERSISTENT AND HOPEFUL.
Tikvah was alone, broke, tired, in pain, weak but she was also PERSISTENT AND HOPEFUL.
This is what amazes me about her, She didn’t say let me go try this Jesus, she didn’t say it might work, she didn’t say I might get lucky or who knows. Her faith told her that this was it! She had built up so much faith from hearing about Jesus that she said to herself that if I could only touch the hem of His garment I SHALL be healed. Listen, this woman was willing to risk it all. She wasn’t allowed to go in the midst of people, she wasn’t even strong to march up to Jesus. In fact, I imagine her crawling on the ground or something because you can’t tell me she bled everyday for 12 years and it got worse each year yet she could walk properly. Sometimes day two of my period and walking to my closet is a huge task. So Tikvah who heard about Jesus in her corner, got so energized and fueled by the things she heard He had done and it pushed her to go get her healing.
This is a woman who wanted it THAT BAD!! My dad would say her story didn’t make it into the Bible because of her healing because we’d seen Jesus heal and do much more but because of her character. This is a woman who kept going, after 12 years, she still believed she’d find a cure. This is a woman who pushed herself each day. She didn’t give up. She had an expectation when she met Jesus. She had faith enough to make her whole. Tikvah was a spectacular woman in my opinion. I mean Esther, Ruth, Mary… yeah yeah they did alright too so you can have those ones as role models but give me Tikvah! She’s my type of woman. To be very honest, after a year of constantly bleeding, I’d have looked into the heavens and screamed SMITE ME NOW FATHER! I really would have given up after a year. I think it’s why I like her so much. She’s a fighter who knew what she wanted and wasn’t going to stop until she got it.
I mean Esther, Ruth, Mary… yeah they did alright so you can have those ones as role models but give me Tikvah!
So for today, I just wanted to introduce you to my heroine. The brave, strong, persistent, hopeful Tikvah. To understand how amazing her story is, I felt the need for you to take a walk in her shoes, see life through her eyes. I needed you, through her story to remember your own ‘issue of blood‘. You know, that thing that won’t go away, that thing you are struggling with, that need you have, that thing that is keeping too long, that thing that is holding you back and through her story I pray you also find the strength and faith to finally connect to the provision Christ has already made for you and be freed!
I urge you to read her story for yourself, read it under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit or you are just going to see 10 verses of english! Ask the Holy Spirit to show you beyond those 10 and reveal your message within it. Today, i just wanted to spark your interest about her, tell her story a little differently than you’ve read and i will bring you the 3 other major things I noticed from her story aside the power of faith. So until next week, stay blessed!
