“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour” 1 Peter 5:8
One morning as I was heading to work, this came to me… ” he preys so I pray’ so I just wrote it down knowing I’d write on it eventually but later that evening I go to church and my pastor talks about being alert in prayer for the devil is always on the move looking for someone to devour. Coincidence? I think not!
So the first time I ever read about the devil going to and fro and walking about the earth was in Job 1:7. I remember reading it and thinking WHAT?!!!!! The devil is always on the move seeking for blood, seeking for entry to destroy you, steal from you or kill you? Ah hasn’t he heard of vacations or lunch break or leave (lol). It makes you wonder why is he walking to and fro searching who to attack, why doesn’t he just randomly select someone and attack? Well, first and foremost let’s establish that the devil is always on the move seeking BELIEVERS to devour… He’s not interested with people in the world, he already has them on his team so he’s uninterested in them or where they are heading because he knows they have no proper destination or are headed for destruction so he really can’t be bothered. He’s looking for the righteous people like Job, Eve, Jesus, Jewie (you know hehe), the kind who have understood their relevance and are working towards purpose. Those are the ones he seeks to devour.
However, we see him ask God in Job 1:10 “Have you not put a hedge around him and his house and all that he has, on every side?” Let me let you in on a little secret, when you come to Christ and have the fear of God within you and consciously walk according to His purpose, the Lord builds a hedge around you. He protects you from each side because you are that important to Him and once you are important to God, you become an important target for the devil. One of the ways this hedge or wall of protection is held up is by PRAYER!!! Being sober, alert in constant prayer.
That’s why the devil goes to and fro, he’s waiting for us to let our guards down, relax in prayer, get our hedges weakened so that He can jump in and attack. He’s constantly on the lookout for preys who haven’t understood what prayer does for them. In many forms and ways, he sets out to prevent and distract us from praying. He throws worry your way, he throws doubt your way, he throws fear your way, he attacks your health, gets you overly busy with work, sends some small money your way so you are so comfy you feel you don’t need to pray like before. He sets you up! To weaken the strength of the hedge God has built around you so he can attack and sway you off purpose.
I always wondered why the Bible said to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17). I mean isn’t there a rest period? Why must we constantly be vigilant in prayer. The devil can’t possibly be constant on your case right? Well sorry to inform you but once you’ve taken a stand to walk according to the will and purpose of God for your life, he’s always walking up and about the earth looking for an opportunity to cut that journey off.
So back to my title, because I know the devil preys, I pray! I pray so that the hedge of protection that is keeping the serpent from biting me (Ecclesiastes 10:8) stays up, I pray because He preys! I pray because he’s after my purpose, he’s after my inheritance, he’s after my ‘happy ever after’. I need to pray constantly; without ceasing because the devil is also looking to prey and prey without ceasing. The Holy Ghost witnessed to me at the right time because I was getting weary in prayer, I was getting relaxed but He needed me to remember that yes God has put a wall of protection around me but it’s prayer that holds it up and the devil hasn’t left my case. He’s patiently waiting for me to ‘slack’ so that he may have me.
Once I’m walking towards purpose I’m important to God and once I’m important to God, I become important to the devil as well. So don’t believe in the lie that I did that you have sometime to breathe and just chill because the devil is far from you. No, no, no, he’s right at the corner waiting for you to let your guard down that he may devour you.
Like they say nowadays STAY WOKE! Until next time, stay blessed xoxo
