For a couple of days now, God has been speaking to me about unity; about the strength of coming together. Unity is one of the things our generation struggles with. Everyone wants to be their own man, wants to be ‘self-made’, wants to climb up the ladder alone and no matter what they have to do to get there, there must be a climbing. People will betray friends and family for ‘fortune’ by laying down their dignity and integrity. People will even deny Jesus for favor in the eyes of men. I don’t know whether I’m only noticing this because we are growing so our selfishness and craving for independence from everything and everyone is becoming more evident to me. People are just in a hurry to ‘make it’. There is no time to wait for anyone, there is no time to wait on God even. I’m sorry, but this is why prophets and people in the prophetic ministries are gaining so much attention these days because people would rather find out find out from a prophet quickly what they need to go or do or even be with than to be patient and wait upon the Lord for themselves but this is a topic for another day. Today I want to talk about the power in unity! The power in coming together to build.
I happen to work in a co-working space called Workshed. Just incase you are unsure what co-coworking is, Wikipedia defines it as ” a style of work that involves a shared working environment, often an office, and independent activity. Unlike in a typical office environment, those coworking are usually not employed by the same organization”. I work in a space like that with these other really cool companies doing different things. One-day God said to me “To think it is just merely by chance or coincidence that you all found yourselves there at this same time is an insult to my wisdom and to my name.” I sat there in silence like an African child receiving scolding from a parent. How did I not see it, that God put us together to sharpen each other, to be concerned for each other, to be each other’s keeper, to affect and be affected by. When God puts someone in your path regardless of how short the period is, it serves purpose so we should seek to know His intention.
God is very intentional about us. He walked our whole lives with us to the end before it begun. If He’s placed you in a place, it’s NEVER by chance, there is work to do.
When God said we were insulting His name what my spirit received from it was that God means creator! Creator means He made things for a specific purpose so every time we don’t chase after purpose in our lives or we don’t find purpose in situations, we are insulting Him and His nature. God is very intentional about us. He walked our whole lives with us to the end before it begun. If He’s placed you in a place, it’s NEVER by chance, there is work to do.
After He told me all of that, He begun teaching me about the strength in coming together and this led me to read the story of the Tower of Babel again which is found in Genesis 11. My mind was blown at the revelations I received from reading it again. As a child, it was just a story about some ‘idiots’ who wanted to build a tower to reach the heavens who were stopped by God! Reading it again yesterday my eyes were opened to some things. “LET US build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth”, they said. LET US immediately stood out for me as I read. The power to accomplish wasn’t in their intelligence, it wasn’t in their skills, it wasn’t in their strength, it wasn’t in their character. It was in the fact that they were of one mind and one language to come together to build. They were empowered because they became an ‘US’. There was so much power simply in their decision to come together to build. Writing now the Holy Spirit just made a reference to why marriage is another powerful institution because it’s the coming together of God, a man and woman to build! The decision to come together according to the Will of God is already the birth of amazing things. Back to the story, the first thing I noticed was that there is so much power in realizing that we are much stronger as a united front. As Christians, as a nation, as a generation, as a family, as a couple, as colleagues even. These people building the Tower of Babel weren’t even doing so according to the word of God but their decision to be of one body, one mind was enough to build something extraordinary.
The next thing I noticed in their decision to unite and build, something amazing happened… they caught Gods attention! God saw that they had come together and It called His attention that it says in Genesis 11:5 “And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.” The Lord came down to see what was going on. Look at that! The choice and the decision to come together alone was so powerful that the Lord said wait a min, wait a min, what’s going on here? These people might just accomplish this ‘stupid’ thing they intend to do simply because they were united. They were of one mind concerning this project and of one mind concerning each other. I don’t know about you but that excited me. The moment there is a union built according to the Will of God and grounded on the foundation of His word. The Lord steps in! He comes down but not only see but to be a part of! I am now beginning to understand why its so necessary for the body of Christ to be united. Why it’s so necessary that for the revival to happen in our countries, our continent and the world as a whole, God doesn’t need us to be smarter, quicker, stronger, louder. He simply needs us to unite. To be of one mind concerning the world and concerning the church. He just needs us to decide to be one body under Him. It’s in this unity that He comes down to back us with His power and strength and command the blessing over us.
The moment there is a union built according to the Will of God and grounded on the foundation of His word. The Lord steps in! He comes down but not only see but to be a part of!
At this point, my eyes were opened wide and there was both excitement and disappointment in my heart. We have had the keys all this while and we’ve played the fool and wasted time I said, but in God there is never time wasted for He will restore all wasted years, all the years we kept ourselves in the dark of this truth. This was so exciting for me that I quickly closed my bible to start writing this post thinking that I had seen everything I needed to but the Holy Spirit gently said to go back to the passage. Here I am thinking, ‘ah after God came down to see, we all know what happened next, He confused their tongue and they couldn’t continue to build. What is there again?
However, I did go back to see what the next verses said and it was right in that moment that I was so pleased the Holy Spirit wasn’t a Fante woman like my mother because the knock I would have received on my head and the deadly side eye would not have been a joke. The next verse, which is the verse 6 of Genesis 11 went straight into my highlighted pile! It’s probably one of my favorite verses for this season. It reads ” And the Lord said, Behold, the people is ONE, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now NOTHING will be RESTRAINED from them, which they have IMAGINED to do.” I thought I was excited before at the mere fact that God steps in when His children unite but this!!!! This is gold! As DJ Khaled would say MAJOR KEY! God said look at them, they are of one mind, one language and this thing they’ve begun would prosper and nothing could stop them because they are united. Right there I knew why we were failing in our lives, our relationships, our family, our workplaces, our churches, our schools. Our school systems right from the start don’t encourage unity. Right from the start, we are put in competition with each other. Subconsciously teaching us that it’s more important to go alone than to build with each other and work as a team. I will not even step into my education rant because anyone who knows me, knows that this post will quickly turn into a thesis long post. *So walk away Jewie, walk away! *
” And the Lord said, Behold, the people is ONE, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now NOTHING will be RESTRAINED from them, which they have IMAGINED to do ” – Genesis 11: 6
God said NOTHING WOULD BE RESTRAINED FROM THEM; WHICH THEY HAVE IMAGINED TO DO. Aha!!! This is why the devil needed Adam and Eve to want dependency from God. To be self made; be their own gods. God is the glue that holds the union together so once the enemy can disconnect you from your source, there would never be the longing for togetherness. It’s why our generation is suffering. The spirit of independence from God still blows over us. The spirit of ‘ me me me”. My mum calls it ‘the spirit of I’. We don’t want to succeed as a body. It’s me, myself and I! The devil delights in the fact that we are losing sight of this major key! He sits back and is watching us struggle. He’s watching us push each other down to get up the ladder knowing very well that the correct way to reach the top is by climbing together. The devil plants envy, pride, unforgiveness, mistrust, bitterness and hurt in our hearts against each other and sits back knowing these installations will work against us for his good.
We build extraordinary things when there is an US rooted in Christ! When there is an US in line with the Will of God. Reading the story of the tower of Babel, The Holy Spirit brought my attention to the truth that God in the beginning spoke everything into being but when it came to the making of an extraordinary being which is man, He said LET US! He needed the strength of the trinity to accomplish that amazing work. God makes us understand that for lack of knowledge His people perish! We praise God for this revelation. The African proverb was right, ‘If you want to go fast go alone, if you want to go far go together’. Many of us are going so fast nowhere. True satisfaction like my dad would say is a gift God gives you only in your walk in purpose! Nothing else would satisfy. We accomplish great things when we unite! We call forth God’s attention and presence when we become of one mind according to His Word. Don’t be deceived that you can make it on your own. The ‘me myself and I’ or me against the world deception is from the devil, it’s set to cause us to live ordinary lives and die. Today I was sent to remind you that God is intentional, wherever you find yourself serves purpose. Whomever you find yourself with or surrounded by serves purpose so instead of holding to the spirit of I and going so fast nowhere. Seek God concerning people you find yourself with, unite under His banner and build something SPECTACULAR!
