Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Exodus 20:4-5 KJV Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, …” Exodus 20:3-5 KJV
Whenever we read out the Ten Commandments as kids in Sunday school or regular school, I would always skip this one in my head and start reading from ‘thou shall not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain‘. Because gods? How could that even happen? All the other things, I needed to say to myself because they could happen especially ‘thou shalt not covet their neighbor’s husband’ (I replace wife when I read). That, I had to say over and over because what if Chris Hemsworth was my ‘neighbour’ or Theo James or Jesse Williams *sighhhhh* That would definitely be a hard commandment to keep lol Wait, before I continue, please tell me I wasn’t the only kid who read ‘neighbour’ and thought about it literally as the person you live across from or share a wall with…hehe Anyway, so I would skip the first part of the commandments because as for idol worshipping? I absolutely positively COULD NOT! This one, I can stand tall with my chest high and say that I can not and do not have any other gods apart from God or can I?
Idol worshipping was simply ridiculous to me. Even if you aren’t spiritual, common sense should not allow you to make an idol out of anything to bow down to and worship! let me just say now when I read/heard idols anywhere I would think of a voodoo doll under my bed, a statue at the corner of a temple or a room in my house, maybe a pot or some unseen thing I leave food out for. Each time I said I could not worship an idol, that’s where my mind took me. Never did I think I could mount up things and people in my heart and in my minds to worship.
The first time it hit me that I was an idol worshipper was in July 2015, I was washing my clothes and listening to Forever Jones‘ song ‘He wants it all‘ and then there was a line that said ‘let go of your idols‘ and as I sang that line out, I said to myself ‘Thank goodness I don’t serve any other god but God’ and the Holy Spirit said ever so gently ‘OH but you do Jewie‘ and then continued to say … ‘Anything you exalt above the Word and Name of the Lord is your Idol’. When you focus more on your occupation than your relationship with Him and His will for your life, your job becomes your idol. When God says forgive the brethren and you choose not to, you have put that brethren over His word so that becomes your idol, when you put your own will above the Will of God, you become your own idol. Remember Adam and Eve, the serpent told them if you eat the fruit, you would become as gods (Genesis 3:5) So anytime we choose to do things our way over the way of the Lord, anytime we take the glory that is due Him (Galatians 1:5) , we are exalting ourselves above Him and worshipping our very beings as idols. When you put your feelings or love for your partner above God and what He’s saying concerning the relationship, that person and that relationship becomes your idol. Anything that comes first in your life, anything you choose and place before His word becomes your idol.
Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power: for thou hast created all things, and for they pleasure they are and were created – Revelation 4:11
FEAR will always lead us into idolatry. Every time we say we CAN NOT do something or take up a particular task, anytime fear cripples us to believe we can not take up the task, we are making idols of the situation. We are placing the situation above the power and knowledge of the Almighty. You aren’t only relinquishing your willpower to overcome the situation, you aren’t just worshipping the situation or problem, you are calling God a liar too because He said in His word that you can do ALL things through Christ who gives you strength ( Philippians 4:13) so the moment we give in and give up, the moment the situation holds our minds higher than the victory we we have in Christ we are directly or indirectly bowing down to it as an idol and also calling God a liar.
Now thanks be to God, which ALWAYS causes us to triumph in Christ and taketh manifest the savor of His knowledge by us in every place- 2 Corinthians 2:14
Another god we worship above God is the god we have created in our minds to enable us live as comfortable christians. We have completely rejected the God revealed by the Holy Spirit to us in scripture and have moulded Him to suit and fit into our earthly, sensual and devilish desires. We have created this ‘sweetheart’ of a god that is ever so gentle and considerate that he closes his eyes to our folly and is more tolerant to the things we find ourselves doing, things that are clearly contrary to what is required of us as Christians. This god doesn’t demand anything from us, living for him costs us nothing. We can still own our lives, be lords over it yet worship him when convenient and he’s totally fine with it. This god who doesn’t call you out when you do wrong because he’s simply just the sweetest and wouldn’t want to worry our pretty little heads with guilt and conviction. We have become disillusioned Christians who have really bought into the lie that we are serving God Almighty but we’ve just become idol worshippers bowing to a god that only exists in our minds; a god with no authority or power only because we do not want to straighten out our lifestyles, habit and desires and align them according to the Word of God.
I love that God didn’t hide the fact that He’s jealous over us. He didn’t keep it a secret and have us confused when He acted as the jealous Father and Lord that He is. God made you, as my dad would say ‘He had you in mind as an answer to a specific earthly need. There was a conference in heaven about you and how much the earth needed you.‘ He made you as an answer to an earthly need to show forth His Glory right? So of course He’d be jealous if you come here on earth and forget that He chose you and then sent you here for a reason. God wants us to succeed, He wants us to be great, He wants us to be fruitful. He has nothing against you doing well but if you chase those things before a relationship with Him, you make those things your idol. In other words, you submit to those things and exalt them above your relationship with God. God would come against it. He’s not willing to share His first position in your life with anything or anyone.
Even if you exalt the very things He’s sent you to do; things you know He spoke to you about over your relationship with Him, you’ve put a thing above Him and once again as He said He’s jealous… He will not have that, He’d pull those things down and it would bring your attention to Whom is most important. Sometimes the devil steps in and finances these ‘good looking’ agendas and relationships to keep you going, knowing very well that it’s pulling you away from God, knowing that you have mounted those things above the position of God in your life and in your heart. That’s why it’s very important to get your heart right, get your spirit active; be connected and sensitive to the Holy Spirit because …* dramatic pause* NOT ALL SEEMINGLY GOOD-LOOKING THINGS COME FROM GOD. We like to believe the moment it looks good, it’s from God and we ride on this idea, and give those things front seats in our lives and then these things don’t satisfy and leave us in misery in the long run.
The Holy Spirit shared this analogy with me last year, He said ‘Let’s just imagine you bought your spouse a car right? Then now he/she sleeps in it, is always with it, you haven’t seen or spoken to your spouse in days or weeks because his/her precious car is always on their mind. It’s all they talk about with other people, all they think about, all they desire’. What are you going to do?’ Quickly I said, I’d get rid of it one time!!! ‘Hoh min dwen ho twice koraa’ (I wouldn’t give it a second thought) Is a car a bad thing? Absolutely not, but was his/her attachment to it inappropriate… 100% YES! And what did it cause me; the jealous lover to do? To remove it so my place can be re-established. I hope you are getting the picture as clear as i did.
I was sent to remind you and myself that God still wants His first place. No compromises!! What you exalt above Him, He would tear down! I have had to learn this the hard way. I’ve had things ripped from me, had things fail me, I have had to give up relationships because I exalted them above God. I gave them more attention than I gave Him. I gave them HIS spot in my heart. God is God, He deserves to be FIRST!!! He wants to be the foundation and the core of your entire being and walk. He wants to be first so the moment anything or anyone comes between your relationship with Him, like any other jealous lover, He will remove.
Now do a self- check like I was asked to do this morning, is there anything or anyone holding God’s place in your mind and heart? Is there something you will hesitate or would struggle to give up for God? Those things are idols and taking Gods place, God shares His spot with no one! Nothing in this world is worthy to be in His place so once you exalt something to try hold His spot, He’s coming in like wrecking ball lol especially because that thing or person would wreck you eventually. l pray that this post encourages you to evaluate your life. If you find any idols, make sure that you gently help down or forcibly yank down whatever or whoever is comfortably sitting in the seat of the Almighty.
Until next time, stay blessed
